About our District:

Western Districts is the oldest district in the state and although very diverse, we have established a very strong happy district. The diversity of our district, a mixture of very small isolated sand-green clubs and large regional clubs truly reflects country golf.
While Western Districts is the largest district in the state with 47 affiliated Clubs, 28 sand- green clubs and 19 grass-green clubs.  WDLGA has a co-operative group of clubs with a marvellous record in travelling to support local and district tournaments.
Come see our District, play some beautiful courses with breathtaking views. Enjoy the Country Hospitality, fine Food, fabulous Wines and most of all the friendly country atmosphere.
THE WELCOME MAT IS ALWAYS OUT WAITING FOR YOU!

REPORT FOR WGNSW COUNCIL MEETING 25th MARCH 2009

Most Western Districts clubs have not resumed their golfing season after the summer break and early April will see them all back playing; therefore there has not been a lot happening in our district since last meeting. I think most of the WD clubs are suffering with drought and the effects of the economic crisis in some way.

Western Districts Annual Tournament

Western Districts tournament is to be held on 12th, 13th & 14th May 2009 at Duntryleague Golf Club and Orange Ex Services Country Club. Entries close 9th April.

WDLGA Junior Camp and Championships

The very popular junior camp and championships will be held on 14th, 15th and 16th July with championship on 17th July at Duntryleague Golf Club Orange. This camp and championships is open to any junior player. Entries close 26th June.

Pennants

Unfortunately three clubs, Henbury, Condobolin and Coonamble have had to withdraw from our WD pennants competition owing to either finances or declining members.

Tournaments

Change of tournament dates

Sunny Ridge is now having a tournament this year on 30th April

Gulargambone have had to cancel their tournament this year

Henbury tournament is now on 30th August

Wanaaring tournament is now on 7th June

Western Districts will be sending representative teams to the following tournaments
Blue Mountains                      -                       Forbes
Nepean Illawarra                   -                       Mudgee
Marjorie McWilliam Bowl     -                       Cowra
NSW Sands Greens -                       TBA

Gilgandra

Gilgandra Golf Cub has been having difficulties due to declining fields of golfers. However, an enthusiastic committee has rallied and the golf club has hosted and catered for quite a few functions through the summer months which help to keep the finances in a reasonably healthy state.

West Wyalong

West Wyalong ladies will have their open day on 14th March, we are however playing golf in a charity day for the Victorian bush fire appeal on Sunday 8th March and ladies will be donating salads for meals after golf. Our course is very dry with only water for the greens, so we are praying for rain here.

Wanaaring

Wanaaring golf club has 3 female members with handicaps, 2 adults and 1 junior, 5 adult males and 2 juniors so we are most likely the smallest member based club. Our Patron is John Sendon who visits with his family when he is in Australia. We may be little in numbers however we have a big heart. Our financial position is healthy for our member base and we are able to meet our insurance bill which is our largest.

Most of our members have used golf as the time away from the stress of drought and running our stations. The current economic conditions have not hit our club as yet – owning and running outback grazing stations with 8 years drought has been an economic crisis all of its own.

Looking ahead we are looking forward to hosting the 2010 Far West Bowl – I would like to invite the members of the NSW Board and Council to attend the event on Sunday 18th July 2010 for an outback golfing experience on our dirt fairways, sand green and unique clubhouse.

Forbes

The fairways have grassed up after recent rain and although drought affected they are fairly good and we have 30cm preferred lie. Water will be available very soon due to $135,000 grant from Forbes Council so there will be considerable improvements in course conditiions. The greens are looking great after recent coring. We now have access to the ClubHouse due to the appointment of a new manager, Norm Cook, who is a popular local. He is working hard at promoting the Club and a social committee has been formed brainstorming ideas to further improve patronage. Ladies golf numbers are consistent and we have new players and more intending to play due to the huge success of Sevens Golf over last summer. Sevens will commence again next month.

Dunedoo

Dunedoo is feeling the effects of the drought and economic crisis. They have had to retrench their only green keeper and clubhouse cleaner. “Dad’s Army” are doing a wonderful volunteer job looking after the course and the lady members are now the clubhouse cleaners.

Dubbo

Dubbo Golf Club is feeling the effects of the economic crisis with financial problems and decline in numbers.

Mudgee

Mudgee Golf Club is holding an Irish weekend – 20th & 21st March with proceeds to the bushfire appeal.

The ladies clinics have commenced and have proved very successful. Ten new players with four ready to commence in a 10 hole competition shortly.

Our junior programme for the year has commenced with either a 10 hole, 6 hole or modified competition every fortnight and go-go golf for beginners once a month. We are averaging about 20 players. Also many juniors are attending our Tuesday afternoon clinic.

Mudgee is looking forward to a visit from the Vision Impaired Golfers the first week-end in April for their over the mountains competition.   I think about 20 players will be attending.

Happy and successful golfing for the 2009 season to all.

WDLGA Councillor
